This self-guided heritage tour celebrates the early development of the Dorothy Clive Garden, offering a glimpse into its fascinating history. Although the lower garden is not part of this tour, additional information about that area is available through the audio heritage guide sold in the Gift Room. Along the trail, look out for the information boards that share details about the garden’s origins. Colonel Harry Clive created the garden in 1939 for his wife, Dorothy, who was battling Parkinson’s Disease and struggling with mobility. After Dorothy’s passing in 1942, the Colonel continued to nurture the garden, eventually opening it to the public. In 1958, he established the Willoughbridge Garden Trust to preserve its legacy before passing away in 1963.

The garden has long been a source of inspiration and creativity. Over the years, poets like Bert Flitcroft and artists such as Malcolm Hague have hosted workshops and retreats within its tranquil grounds. Many of their artworks remain on display for visitors to enjoy, and this walk offers insights into the sculptures scattered throughout the garden. To commemorate the garden’s 60th anniversary, two special artistic projects were commissioned: a theatre performance by Moonstruck Astronaut and a collection of songs by Mary Keith, both of which can be explored through videos on our website.
